As the new NXT Champion, Trick Williams is going to have no shortage of opponents lined up for the foreseeable future. But that isn’t stopping the new champ from eyeing up the main roster dream matches that could be on his post-NXT horizon.
Following an emotional few weeks in which Trick has defeated former best friend and Trick Melo Gang member Carmelo Hayes in two straight bouts (the first of which headlined NXT’s Stand and Deliver show in front of a record crowd of over 16,000 for the developmental brand) and then captured the NXT Title from Ilja Dragunov at Spring Breakin’, you could be forgiven for thinking that the 29-year-old was focusing on the first number one contender gunning for his newly won gold.
And no doubt Williams will be running his eyes up and down the NXT roster for potential challengers. But it isn’t just the assortment of Full Sail based feuds that Trick is eagerly anticipating.
With his former parnter-in-crime Melo now a first round SmackDown draft pick and the recently vanquished Ilja Dragunov likely not far behind his fellow former NXT Champion on the main roster, Trick must know that his time to shine on the red or blue brand can’t be too far down the road, either.
So when WrestleSphere were given the chance to catch up with Trick during WrestleMania week in Philadelphia at the beginning of April, the question had to be asked: Who does Trick Williams most want to go one-on-one with on Raw or SmackDown?
His answer did not disappoint.
“On the main roster? Definitely GUNTHER,” Trick emphatically responded, instantaneously.
“Man, I got nothing but love and admiration for everything he does in the ring, he is the Ring General, but I wanna see what that’s about. So yeah, GUNTHER, one day…”
Having already overcome one of GUNTHER’s most prominent rivals in Dragunov, a superstar who is no stranger to defeating the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion, Trick appears to want to follow in the former champ’s footsteps and take the Austrian powerhouse down, himself.
By the time Trick reaches those new heights, though, GUNTHER may already have even more accolades to his name, with the former IC Champ recently returning to Monday Night Raw to declare himself for this year’s King Of The Ring tournament, the finals of which will take place at King and Queen of the Ring on 25 May in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
With the second night of this year’s WWE Draft upon us tonight, it may be that we see a few main roster stars in need of rejuvenation sent to Orlando, meaning Trick could have a few unexpected opponents arriving in the very near future.
And as for the GUNTHER match, as the NXT Champion himself says, “one day…”. We cannot wait.
