GUNTHER vs Goldberg at WWE Crown Jewel or Survivor Series can work, here’s why

Gunther vs Goldberg Poster

The plan for WWE Crown Jewel appears to be Cody Rhodes vs GUNTHER for the inaugural WWE Crown Jewel Championship, but I still think that we’re going to get Goldberg vs GUNTHER in some manner. Personally? I think it could work.

Granted, Goldberg’s body of work over the past few years has been anything but stellar, with his last genuinely great spectacle being against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33. Having said that, there is absolutely something you can do with the former WCW Champion to help build GUNTHER even further as a dominant Champion.

Goldberg is Mr Saudi Shows

It would surprise me if WWE brought in Goldberg for an appearance at Bad Blood to then not use him at Crown Jewel in November. Bill has been used on shows in Saudi Arabia since 2019 and clearly there is a want from powers that be to bring in as many late 90s stars as possible. If The Undertaker could still go then they would be carting him out there, so having 57 year old Goldberg teased and then not part of the show would be an odd choice.

There are two scenarios I can see taking place at Crown Jewel in November, with Goldberg and GUNTHER having at least an interaction, if not an actual match.

GUNTHER vs Goldberg or Goldberg Interfering?

With GUNTHER seemingly tied up with Cody at Crown Jewel, I can easily see WWE going with Goldberg interfering in the main event and costing GUNTHER the incredibly-prestigious-and-not-at-all-pointless WWE Crown Jewel Championship. This would lead to GUNTHER vs Goldberg at Survivor Series for the World Heavyweight Championship as well as giving Saudi Arabia their dose of Goldberg.

The other scenario would be Goldberg getting GUNTHER to agree to a match against him at Crown Jewel before the main event. If that’s the case, then you can have Goldberg lose to GUNTHER after a sub-10 minute brutal battle that means GUNTHER loses to Cody later in the night. This way Saudi gets their Goldberg fix in an actual match, GUNTHER looks strong in the opener and loses nothing by getting beaten by Cody because he’s already been through the WCW legend.

I can see the first scenario being way more likely to play out when the Crown Jewel Premium Live Event takes place, but we’ll have to wait on that.

Why Goldberg vs GUNTHER can work

If we’re going to get GUNTHER vs Goldberg, and there is absolutely no reason to believe at this point that we won’t, then there is zero chance that GUNTHER will be taking a loss.

The Austrian powerhouse is one of the most protected stars in the company right now, and they are going to continue to build him up as this huge behemoth of a hoss. Yes, Sami Zayn beat him at WrestleMania, but this is World Champion level GUNTHER, he isn’t losing anytime soon.

The difference between putting Goldberg in a match with an ageing Undertaker as opposed to GUNTHER is that this won’t be two workers way past their prime, it’ll be one worker way past his prime and one of the best performers on the planet right now. The Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar matches can be a template, recreate that with GUNTHER and then let the Ring General move on to his next feud. This can also lead to WWE running with GUNTHER vs Lesnar at WrestleMania next year, should the allegations against the Beast Incarnate as part of the Janel Grant lawsuit against Vince McMahon be cleared or settled.

Goldberg vs GUNTHER does not need to be a 20 minute technical classic, it just needs to be 5 to 10 minutes of two powerhouses throwing their biggest moves at each other with the World Heavyweight Champion emerging victorious. GUNTHER gets a massive win against a legend and Goldberg gets decent opponent to bow out against after some horrific matches against ‘Taker, Bobby Lashley, Roman Reigns and The Fiend.
