Mikey Rukus has his yearly catch-up with Wrestlesphere’s Dom Smith to talk about Sting’s last AEW match, creating his theme, The Eras EP and much more.
Jumping straight into our interview with Mickey Rukus, we asked him how he’s feeling about Sting’s last match at AEW Revolution (2024).
He said: “Definitely mixed emotions going into Sting’s last match. Sometimes you go through the motions and it doesn’t start to hit until we’re there, so those feelings, the emotion is starting to come out now.”
“This is a culmination, you don’t really see this a lot in professional wrestling, where there’s a build up to a send off and we know that its coming, and just taking time to reflect over what Sting has meant to all of us.”
“Not just as fans or the Little Stingers who’ve followed him since childhood, but as a peer, a co-worker, a friend, a mentor. I don’t think the impact that he’s had has truly hit him, but if it hasn’t, then it will by next Sunday. Everyone is going to feel it.”
With Mikey working on Sting’s The Eras EP for AEW Music and the Icon’s retirement, we asked the artist if developing these tracks came with an undertone of sadness and if it was intended to be a tribute to Sting?
He told us: “Absolutely, I always like to tell stories that compliments what we’re doing on screen and what we’re doing with our talent. And sometimes the best inspiration comes within an instant, you don’t really know until you know, and it happened the night Sting announced his last match.”
“We had some conversations and I knew it had to be done. I had been looking at doing a symphonic compilation for Sting and in this moment it felt like the right thing to do, it just kind of blossomed from there.”
“Just thinking about the different eras that people had followed Sting and trying to create a time capsule, such as the TNA Joker Sting or trying to capture the WCW Surfer Sting so it sounds like something that came right out of the 90s. Then being able to dive into the Crow era for a bit, which is kind of an extension of what he is today, but that was the early iteration.
“So it’s been about understanding the journey and bringing it all up to the Icon era in AEW. With his original AEW theme being titled ‘Arrival’ it was just really fitting to title this one ‘Farewell’. It was like putting a bow at the end.”
